Established in 2020, the Department of Geography at TJU offers an undergraduate degree in Geography. In Fall 2020, the first batch of 28 undergraduate students were enrolled in the "Science Experimental Class (Geography)".
Taught by leading faculty and researchers, this interdisciplinary BSc program combines theory with practical field work, and give students a fresh perspective on the world around them and a thorough grounding in current geography research. By attaching importance to field courses and research-based learning, this program supports the students in achieving their potential to be modern geographers who can use critical analysis, powerful technologies, and an integrative, holistic perspective to understand complex 21st century challenges.
The BSc program in Geography offers a 4-year curriculum with 3 core modules:
(1) Earth surface processes and environmental geography;
(2) Biogeochemistry;
(3) Data and geographic information science and technology.
The department employs leading faculty and researchers in the field to guide the work, which consists of 25 professors and 21 associate professors. Most of them have long-term overseas study experience, and are undertaking a number of international and national research projects. Therefore, the students have the opportunity to get involved in global research on some of the world’s biggest concerns, including climate change, environmental management and sustainable development.
Departmental facilities and access to the best resources are available to our students and researchers, including a National Critical Zone Observatory of Bohai Coastal Region (Bohai CZO), a Tianjin Key Laboratory, three fieldwork practices in Ji County (Tianjin), Qinhuangdao City (Hebei Province) and Zigui County (Hubei Province).
