Field Station Overview

1. Field Station Overview

Tianjin Bohai Rim Coastal Earth Critical Zone National Observation and Research Station(Bohai National CZO) was established in December 2019, and officially entered the national station sequence in October 2021. Bohai National CZO is the only national field station on the Earth Critical Zone built by universities in China, and the only national observation and research station in Tianjin. The units responsible for the construction of the station are the School of Earth System Science of Tianjin University and the Tianjin Key Laboratory of Earth’s Critical Zone Science and Sustainable Development in Bohai Rim. The units participating in the construction of the station include Tianjin Academy of Environmental Sciences, Tianjin Eco-Environmental Monitoring Center and other research institutions.

The establishment of the Bohai National CZO is mainly aimed at the ecological and environmental problems in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region around the Bohai in the context of global changes and intensified human activities. With the goal of sustainable development of social economy and ecological environment, it is based on the research concept of multi-circle, multi-factor, multi-scale, multi-disciplinary and comprehensive integration of the Earth critical zone system science. To build a comprehensive observation network of "land-sea-air" in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, build a high-level field scientific observation and research platform covering the intersection of multiple research fields such as meteorology, hydrology, ecology, geochemistry, geology and remote sensing, and develop cutting-edge scientific theories and systematic observation and analysis methods of the Earth critical zone in the coastal area. Effectively screen the impacts of human activities and climate change on the coastal ecological environment, predict the future evolution trend, propose measures for ecological environmental protection and resource utilization, and provide a scientific basis and application paradigm for ecological environmental protection and function improvement, resource exploitation, major project construction, and sustainable social and economic development in the Bohai Rim region of China.

2. Goals

(1) Systematic monitoring and data accumulations of key elements, interface processes, and energy and material fluxes within the earth critical zone of coastal areas, including water, soil, atmosphere, and biosphere;

(2) A field research station for studying the evolutions of the structure, composition, and biogeochemical processes of the earth critical zone in coastal areas;

(3) A demonstration base for testing theories and technologies for ecological environment improvement and sustainable development in coastal areas;

(4) An educational base for scientific training for professionals and scientific education for youth, as well as for international collaborations of earth critical zone research.
