Field Station Overview

Critical Zone Observatory of Bohai Coastal Region(Bohai CZO) was established in December 2019 by the Institute of Surface Earth System Science (ISESS) and Tianjin Key Laboratory of Earth’s Critical Zone Science and Sustainable Development in Bohai Rim, Tianjin University. The Bohai CZO is also partnered with Tianjin Environmental Protection Research Institute, Tianjin Ecological Environment Monitoring Center, and other local and national scientific research institutes and government agencies. In 2021, the Bohai CZO became the Tianjin Bohai Rim Coastal Earth Critical Zone National Observation and Research Station, which is supported by the Ministry Of Science and Technology of China.

Based on the concept of the system science of earth critical zone, it aims to build a state-of-art scientific observation and research platform in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, which consists of monitoring networks of meteorology, hydrology, ecology, geochemistry, geology, remote sensing, and among others. With the establishment of the field station, it also aims to develop new theories and analysis methods for coastal earth critical zones to predict and distinguish the impacts of human activities and climate change on the ecological environment in the Bohai Rim region, and to provide scientific supports and decision-making systems for the protection of ecological environments and the improvement of ecosystem services and functioning in the Bohai Rim region.
