The School of Earth System Sciences (hereinafter referred to as "SESS") perseveres in focusing on the frontiers of science and national needs, strengthening forward-looking deployment and platform construction, promoting cross-integration and source innovation, bringing together scientific research teams, creating scientific research peaks, and striving to become an important base which is capable to undertake scientific research projects to solve major global and regional ecological and environmental problems, and to provide scientific support for national and local ecological civilization development.
The school sets up 8 research centers to investigate the complexity of the global system, including the interactions, synergies and feedbacks that link the oceans, atmosphere, land surfaces and freshwater systems.
Research themes in Earth System Science: (1) Earth System Processes; (2) Earth System Simulation; (3) Earth System Governance
Research themes in Geography: (1) Earth's critical zone processes and biogeochemical cycles; (2) Big data and smart geography; (3) Nature-society coupling and sustainable development
