A SESS Master Student Won the First Prize in the 15th National GIS Skills Contest for College Students

2023-11-08

On Oct 31st, 2023, the award list for the Paper Track of the 15th National GIS Skills Contest for College Students, organized by Chinese Society for Geodesy Photogrammetry and Cartography (CSGPC) and China Association for Geospatial Industry and Sciences (CAGIS), was announced. In this contest, 3 first prizes, 21 second prizes and 61 third prizes were awarded. Notably, one of the first prizes went to the paper titled Long-term spatio-temporal dynamics and driving mechanism of vegetation after forest fire in Northern China, authored by Mr. Jiang Bohan, a SESS master student in Geography under the guidance of A/Prof. Chen Wei.

This paper applied quantitative remote sensing method to analyze the vegetation recovery in the Greater Hinggan forested area, over a span of nearly 20 years following a forest fire in 1987. Considering the differences in both internal conditions and external influences on forest vegetation recovery within the burned and unburned zones in the fire-affected area, this paper assessed remote sensing indices used for monitoring. The spatio-temporal dynamics of forest vegetation in different regions were analyzed based on optimal vegetation index, and the driving forces affecting the growth of forest vegetation were quantitatively and temporally identified through GD and GWR models. This research offers valuable insights into monitoring long-term after-fire forest recovery and serves as a scientific basis and reference for the development of targeted forest protection and management policies.
