A new crop of SESS students got their official welcome to the School when Orientation kicked off on Sept. 2nd, 2023.
The worth of events began at the Conference Center, where 86 new graduate students were welcomed with a ceremony and a chance to mingle with one another. They then heard welcome remarks from Prof. LIU Congqiang, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Dean of SESS.
“You have arrived here at a critical inflection point for the Earth,” Prof. LIU told the students. He listed the emergencies that require the attention of earth scientists: geologic hazards, climate change, biodiversity loss and so on. “Faced with this series of interlocking crises, we need to act as a member of School of Earth System Science. We can devote our time and talents to addressing these deep challenges.”
Students also heard from Prof. LIU Xueyan on behalf of all the supervisors, Prof. CHEN Jiubin, Associate Dean for academic affairs, and Ms. YUAN Jingjing, a recipient of the National Scholarship from the Class of 2019.
Other highlights of the orientation included lab tours; sessions on programs, research centers, scientific research methods and academic integrity; and affinity gatherings with their research groups.
