On October 24, 2022, the SESS held the first online Tianjin University International Education Program for Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Defense ( hereinafter referred to as the "International Doctoral Thesis Defense" ). The doctoral students Beibei Chen and Ye Yang successfully completed the international defense of their doctoral thesises with full votes. Xiaomin Fang, the professor from the Research Institute of Tibetan Plateau, CAS, served as the chairman of the International Doctoral Thesis Defense Committee. The members include Professor Rob Ellam from the University of Glasgow in the United Kingdom and Professor Xixi Lǚ from the National University of Singapore, Professor Xiaolin Hou from Technical University of Denmark, Professor Qingjun Guo from Institute of Geographic Science and Natural Resources, CAS, and other well-known experts and scholars in the field of environmental and geographic science at home and abroad. Academician Congqiang Liu, Dean of the SESS, tutors and more than 70 teachers and students attended the online thesis defense.
Academician Congqiang Liu first introduced the background of the International Doctoral Thesis Defense. Later, Beibei Chen and Ye Yang respectively took “Chemical weathering of rivers originating from Tibetan Plateau, constrained by stable calcanium, magnesium and radiogenic tectonic isotopes” and “Quantum landscape evolution of the eastern Tibetan Plateau: insights from in situ cosmogenic nuclides”, as the topics to discuss the background, main research contents and plans, main innovation points, and published papers and achievements presentation, etc. The members of International Doctoral Thesis Defense Committee raised questions on technical testing methods, application theories and future research prospects, and put forward guiding opinions and suggestions on further in-depth research of the thesis.
After deliberation, all members unanimously agreed to pass the defense of the two applicants. On behalf of all members, the chairman of the committee congratulated the two applicants and they took an online group photo together.
