In October 2022, SESS signed a cooperation agreement with the Tianjin Port Forest Saline-alkali Tolerant Plant Science and Technology Development Co., Ltd., which is a subsidiary company the Tianjin Binhai City Construction Group. Under the terms of the agreement, the two sides will leverage their respective resources and work together to build the "Binhai Critical Zone Observation Base", which is part of the Tianjin Bohai Rim Coastal Earth Critical Zone National Observation and Research Station (Bohai CZO).
The Bohai CZO was established in December 2019. It has partnered with the local authorities in charge of the Qilihai and Beidagang Wetlands to develop a systematic observation approach to studying geological, ecological, and socioeconomical systems in the Bohai Rim region.
