Invited by Prof. Wang Xin and Dr. Hu Wei, Prof. Zhang Daizhou from the Prefectural University of Kumamoto (Japan) visited ISESS for academic exchange in September. On the morning of 10 September, Prof. Zhang gave a talk on sulfate and nitrate in Asian dust particles at the Lecture Hall 221, No. 16 Building.
In the talk, Prof. Zhang compared the sulfate and nitrate contents and mass ratios to dust loadings, as well as iron and calcium contents in dust samples in the Taklimakan/Tengger deserts and at downwind areas. He also showed some case studies at downwind areas during dust events by combining meteorological conditions, particle morphology and elemental composition based on single particle analysis at different stages of dust events. According to these studies, Prof. Zhang explained the sources and formation of sulfate and nitrate during dust events and the modification of dust particles during long distance transport. After the talk, Prof. Zhang discussed with the audiences on how to differentiate local and transported sources of mineral particles at downwind areas, sampling techniques of dust particles as well as possible cooperation.
Dr. Daizhou Zhang is a professor in the Faculty of Environmental and Symbiotic Sciences of the Prefectural University of Kumamoto, Japan. He studied in Peking University from 1983 to 1994, and worked there as a postdoc and a staff before he started to work in the present university in 1999. He has been working on aerosol particles at various areas from Chinese deserts to the Northwestern Pacific, and trying to reveal and elucidate the physical and chemical properties and their variations during the long-distance transport over East Asia. Recently, he has extended his research interests to bacterial aerosols and their dependence on mineral particles and weather conditions.
