On 24-25 August, ISESS, IEECAS and HUJ conducted a two-day workshop on the Sino-Israel joint project (‘Quantifying and timing of Holocene rainfall variability of the Indian Monsoon’) supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and the Israel Science Foundation (ISF). 17 participants participated in the workshop, including three participating organizations from China and Israel.
The workshop begun with three academic reports given by Prof. Yehouda Enzel (principal investigator of the Israel party, ‘Sources for the characteristic grain sizes in desert margin loess’), Prof. Adi Torfstein (Particle fluxes in the Red Sea: climatic implications of modern and Quaternary observations’), and Dr. Yonatan Goldsmith (‘The oscillating fringe and paleo-intensity of the East Asian monsoon’). Afterwards, Prof. Hai XU (principal investigator of the Chinese party) introduced the progress and work plan of the project.

Following the workshop was a field survey and sampling across the Asian summer monsoon regions, with special interests in climatic changes, modern and paleo- hydrological changes, and the vegetation responses. A field-based work plan was then brought forward.
Prof. Congqiang Liu, Dean of ISESS, attended the summary meeting, and encouraged both sides to take full advantage of this joint project and develop more cooperation in terms of resources sharing, students exchange, etc..
