When: 17:00pm, 5th Jan. 2023
Tecent Meeting ID: 329 778 020
Speaker: Dr. Lars-Eric Heimbürger-Boavida, CNRS research scientist at Aix-Marseille University. His research interest lies in the application of novel techniques (low-level speciation, stable isotopes and sensor approaches) to outstanding questions on trace metal cycling, especially mercury cycling in the ocean. He is member of the GEOTRACES Standards & Intercalibration committee and GEOTRACES Elemental coordinator. He co-authored of the United Nations Environmental Programme Global Mercury Assessment 2018 & the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme for Mercury 2021. His research has been published at Nature, Nature Geoscience, Nature Communications, ES&T, etc., h-index is over 30.
Abstract: The seminar will be about mercury and methylmercury budgets, starting from a small but relevant basin, the Arctic Ocean. The apparent high ecosystem and human exposure to mercury made the Arctic Ocean a prime study area. International efforts have now made the Arctic Ocean one of the best observed basins and its small size allows to built comprehensive mercury budgets. Then, Dr. Heimbürger-Boavida will attempt to scale this approach up and revise the global mercury assessment. He will make a case on how budget considerations can inform about the impact of global change and stimulate new research.
