Topic: Characteristics of groundwater flow and its related predictive models

Abstract:

Groundwater flow is one of critical components of the global water cycle. Since groundwater is hidden underground, it is very challenging to accurately characterize groundwater flow. Essentially, the complex subsurface structure (i.e., heterogeneity and anisotropy) and the dynamic evolution of water-bearing medium, caused by compression and dilation due to stress change or geochemical reactions, all come into play and affect groundwater flow. In this talk, based on high-fidelity numerical models and phenomenological experimental results, we developed and presented quantitative models to describe the linear and nonlinear flow in porous and fractured media. Moreover, the effects of evolution of water-bearing medium on its hydraulic property (i.e., permeability) are deciphered and estimated at a mechanistic level.
