Topic: Evapotranspiration partitioning and its response to heavy thinning

Abstract:

Evapotranspiration (ET) is an important component of the hydrological cycle, and is composed of canopy interception, tree transpiration and forest floor evaporation, influencing watershed discharge and regional climate. Forest thinning is one of the most common approaches and alters the stand structures and modifies the climatic and soil conditions within the stand, which greatly affect ET processes and further influence water resources and the regional hydrological cycle. This report introduces the importance of ET partitioning and methods of ET measurements, examines the characteristics of ET processes and quantitatively analyzes the changes in ET partitioning after heavy thinning in a Japanese cypress plantation. This study is imperative for modeling changes in forest hydrological processes and to better guiding forest and water management.
