Title: Understanding Engineered Nanoparticle Exposure to Plants: Toxicity and Applications

Abstract: Engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) have at least one dimension less than 100 nanometers (one billionth of a meter) and this small size results in unique and useful properties. Currently, over 1600-NM containing products are commercially available in areas of electronics, health-care, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and food processing/packaging. For today’s presentation, I will cover two topics: ENM-induced phytotoxity; and the use of nanoscale nutrient related particles to suppress crop disease and to enhance plant growth. Investigations to optimize the dose and application regime of NMs, including full-life cycle studies in the field, should be conducted to not only characterize the potential of this treatment strategy but also to assess any negative impacts of NM release on sensitive agro-ecosystems.
