First Level Discipline: Environmental Science & Engineering
1.Introduction
The Doctoral Degree Program in Environmental Science (ISESS) is offered by the Institute of Surface-Earth System Science (ISESS) at Tianjin University. The aims are to develop basic, advanced and strategic research in the area of global and regional ecological/environmental change, to set up a multidisciplinary academic system combining interaction of surface layers and its ecological and environmental effects, and therefore ground for scientific decision-making for social sustainable development. By studying global climate and environment change, the Institute is dedicated to cultivating high caliber Ph.D. students of international excellence in the areas of earth science and its crossing disciplines and making itself a world-class research institution in the field of surface-earth system science.
ISESS has a talented faculty with strong staff support, advanced scientific research ability and well-equipped laboratory facilities. ISESS has established several themes of research direction and a superior research team with a high-level international academic advisory committee. ISESS has world-class analytical capability with advanced instruments, including AMS, MC-ICP-MS, FTICR-MS, SEM, EA/GC/CF-IRMS, etc. This institute adopts the cultivating models of general education, professional education, diversified education and promotes international collaborative education.
The major research topics are:
1) Elemental biogeochemical cycling in river basins;
2) Environment change and Interfacial processes of land and atmosphere;
3) Hydrologic processes and water resource sustainability;
4) Surface interfacial processes and material cycling in pedosphere;
5) Ecological processes and function in Surface-Earth system;
6) Modelling and system research in Surface-Earth system.
2.Objectives
This program aims to cultivate excellent talents with patriotism, global vision, innovation and practical ability. It aims to train top-class talents for basic research, research management, and higher education management in the areas of surface-earth system science, geochemistry, and environmental ecological process. Students who graduate from this program will master the fundamental knowledge of their research fields, understand the research frontier, be capable of carrying out research independently and innovatively, and produce valuable research outcome in their own or interdisciplinary research fields.
3.Program Training and Duration
Program training: The teaching emphasizes theoretical basis. Teachers teach the students according to the textbooks and their rich experience. They also guide the students to actively study after school and to read the classic literature of specific research area. Thanks to the development of modern science and technology, various types of mass spectrometry, chromatography and spectroscopy instruments have been developed and applied in research. In order to train the students to be qualified for basic research of geochemistry and environmental science, the institute emphasizes the combination of theory and practice, and also trains the graduate students to have the skills of conducting experiments and operating large-scale instruments independently.
