1.Introduction

This subject pertaining to environmental sciences and engineering, the first-level discipline carries out reseach about environmental sciences The School of Earth System Sciences (SESS) carries out the basic, foresighted and strategic research on the global and regional ecological/environmental changes, and intends to set up a multidisciplinary system that incorporates both the interaction of different Earth’s compartments and the resulting ecological/environmental effects. The aims are to provide the scientific basis for sustainable development, and to cultivate and excellent lecturers and research scientists in the areas of Earth Sciences and relevant crossing disciplines.

This subject in SESS owns advanced platforms for research and training graduate students, and cutting-edge experimental instruments (including Large and medium-sized instruments such as Nano SIMS, AMS, FT-ICR-MS, MC-ICP-MS, HR-IRMS, SEM, double system-IC, GC-MS/MSLC-MS/MS, and many kinds of small-sized instruments for analysis in laboratory and field) devoted for studying the physical, chemical and biological processes, material cycling and flux variation of Earth’s surfaces. In addition, the SESS is equipped with ultra-cleaning laboratory, general chemistry and biology laboratory, and owns the Tianjin Key Laboratory of Earth Critical Zone Science and Sustainable Development in Bohai Rim.

The major research topics are:

1)      Elemental biogeochemical cycling in river basins;

2)      Environment change and Interfacial processes of land and atmosphere;

3)      Hydrologic processes and water resource sustainability;

4)      Surface interfacial processes and material cycling in pedosphere;

5)      Ecological processes and function in Surface-Earth system;

6)      Modelling and system research in Surface-Earth system.
