报告内容:Prof. Susan Waldron and Dr. Ying Zheng of the School of Geographical and Earth Sciences, University of Glasgow, Scotland, are visiting and will talk about their research they have been carrying out in peatland drainage systems to understand the terrestrial-aquatic-atmospheric C cycle. Peatlands are highly-organic soils and are a globally important C sink, and they cover a large part of Scotland. However in Scotland they are under pressure to host wind farms (to generate energy) and this can cause peat disturbance, increasing C export to drainage systems. Prof. Waldron will share research findings that uses sensors to quantify C export, and Dr. Zheng will follow this with discussion of experiments to understand what controls the composition and fate of dissolved organic C in rivers. Then Prof. Waldron will ‘jump continents’ and discuss her research in the highly-disturbed peatland catchments in Malaysia, an important location for tropical peatland C storage but under pressure from development for agriculture and logging of swamp forest. Here she used 14C to identify how old the C was that was being lost.
