Coupled nitrogen and carbon biogeochemistry in terrestrial ecosystems and its responses to environmental change and anthropogenic N deposition. Nitrogen is the most critical limiting nutrient for microbes and plants. We investigate the biogeochemistry of nitrogen – how human activities alter the sources and processes of bioavailable N in surface-earth systems, and how ecosystems structure (species composition, alien plant invasion) and functions (Carbon dioxide fixation, nitrogen saturation and eutrophication) respond to changes of nitrogen dynamics against climate change (e.g., warming) and anthropogenic nitrogen deposition. We work across a variety terrestrial ecosystems - from the high arctic tundra in Alaska to temperate and subtropical forests in China - and across scales ranging from cellular nitrogen species in plant tissues to the whole system. Novel chemical, biological and isotopic (13C, 15N, 18O&17O) parameters are our major methods in our studies. Our overarching aim is to use basic scientific knowledge on nitrogen cycle to work toward a sustainable planet for future generations.
