On 13th December, Dr. Larissa Schneider gave an academic lecture titled “Mercury Australia: a new research network”.

This presentation canvasses the value of multidisciplinary research in tackling the complexity of issues surrounding mercury use and emissions and, to this end, details the activities of the Mercury Australia research network (www.mercury-australia.com.au).

The creation of Mercury Australia aims to advance our knowledge of the historical uses of Hg in Australia and current need for control on use and emission of this element, with particular attention to the need for increase in knowledge on the biogeochemical cycle of Hg in the Southern Hemisphere.

In particular, the network connects key researchers and facilitates working in the field, and aims to translate current scientific data into a form that can be used by policymakers and governments.
