The International Workshop on Organic Matter in the Atmosphere was held

2018-05-21 127

In East Asia, air pollution, especially for atmospheric aerosols, is a serious environmental issue that influences air quality, regional and global climate, and public health. Organic aerosols, which are ubiquitous in atmospheric environments, have received increasing attention because they contain several thousand organic compounds. Whereas, there has been a large lack of the knowledges on chemical compositions, sources, formation mechanisms and effects of atmospheric organic aerosols.

To demonstrate the most recent progresses on the studies of organic acids and other organics in atmospheric aerosols, snow, rain and fog water in East Asia, the Institute of Surface-Earth System Science (ISESS) held the “International Workshop on Organic Matter in the Atmosphere”. The opening ceremony was presided over by professor FU pingqing. Prof. LIU Congqiang, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, gave the welcome speech. Prof. Kimitaka Kawamura, Fellow of the Geochemical Society, delivered the opening remarks.

The workshop invited a number of specialists to give professional talks, including Frof. WANG Gehui (East China Normal University), Prof. CONG Zhiyuan (Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences), Prof. LAI Senchao (South China University of Technology), Profs. ZHANG Yanlin and XIE Mingjie (Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology), and Prof. Chandra Mouli Pavuluri and Dr. HU Wei (ISESS), etc. The topics covered the composition, sources and optical properties of organic aerosols, the formation of secondary organic aerosols, and bioaerosols, and presented the most recent progresses on the studies of organic acids and other organics in atmospheric aerosols, snow, rain, and fog water in East Asia and other geographical locations across the world. Meanwhile, the participants carried on a deep communication and discussion.
