"Mechanism of coupling action and pollution control of eutrophication and heavy metals in water body in the karst areas" kicked off

2017-07-08 71

Recently, the research project, "Mechanism of coupling action and pollution control of eutrophication and heavy metals in water body in the karst areas", was launched, which was the fifth task of program “Study on pollution process and control mechanism of heavy metals in karst region” (Grant No. U1612442, the initiator unit is Guizhou University). The above program is funded by “Research Center for Karst Science” which launched by National Natural Science Foundation of China and Guizhou Municipal People's Government.

At present, the pollution and risk have increased, which brought by heavy metals, persistent organic pollutants, eutrophication and some new toxic chemicals. Environmental problem is transferring from single to complex pollution, and becomes an urgent matter needing to be solved right away. In karst area, the superimposed effect of featured pollutants in soil and water environment can’t be ignored and its mechanism is also urgently needed to be clarified. Eutrophication and heavy metal pollution, are two major problems for the water environment in karst area. The previous studies suggested that there would have the relationship between eutrophication level and distribution and dynamic change of heavy metal pollution. Nevertheless, the specific interaction process and mechanism are not clear. The mechanism of coupling action and pollution control of eutrophication and heavy metals will be very important to collaboratively control and manage the environmental pollution in lakes and reservoirs.

To solve the problem of heavy metal pollution and water eutrophication in the karst areas, this project will focus on the mechanism of coupling action between heavy metals and eutrophication in lake and reservoir. The expected outcomes of the research are as following: (i) to clarify the source and spatio-temporal distribution characteristics of nitrogen and phosphorus and heavy metals in typical lake and reservoir; (ii) to illustrate the distribution mechanism and migration and transformation characteristics of heavy metals among different interfaces in the water column; (iii) to interpret the mechanism of coupling action between heavy metals pollution and eutrophication process, and related environmental effect in karst area; (iv) to reveal the synergetic control mechanism of heavy metals pollution and eutrophication. This work will improve the understanding of combined pollution, and promote the research on complex environmental problems in the karst area.

The participating units of this project include the Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Guizhou Normal University.
